The sun had almost set on this particular summer evening, its red glow poured over the land, warming and soothing the people below. A tanned and handsome young man ran a hand through his sandy hair and sighed contently, his eyes closed as the breeze ruffled his locks gently. He sat on the grassy bank for a few moments longer in a calm silence then suddenly, and without opening his eyes; he reached out and grabbed at something fluttering past his ear. Bringing his hand to his chest, he looked down and slowly uncurled his fingers; a moth flew out and flickered around him a few times before disappearing again. A moth? The man thought to himself, as he slowly pulled himself to his feet, he knew this calling card, it was her calling card.
“A moth.” The man repeated aloud, his voice holding a humorous tone. ”Out of everything you could have to represent you, a moth as always.”
“A moth is but a butterfly, painted differently.” A woman’s voice behind him spoke. “Yet people seem to love them. I even recall you are rather fond of them.”
A smile broke out on the young man’s face as he turned to face the female newcomer. “You haven’t changed, how are you?”
“Rested, very rested.” The auburn-haired woman replied, returning the smile as she stepped forwards and looked out over the valley with him.
“I should hope so.” Came the man’s reply. “Nine months of rest should be enough for anyone.”
“You would know.” The woman’s reply was quick and sharp. “I heard Winter was harsh this year, I suppose you both had a lot of fixing to do.”
“It kept me busy, that’s for sure.” The former frowned. “Time flies when you’re busy, I feel like I haven’t had any time to relax.”
There was a pause, though it was more calm than awkward, and the two friends continued to watch the sun set in the distance. When it was dark enough for them to see the first few stars in the cloudless sky, the man sighed and stretched out his arms, breaking the silence.
“It’s almost time for me to go. Otherwise I’ll get grounded for staying out too late.” A grin appeared on his face.
The woman nodded and gave him a warm smile in reply. “I trust you haven’t forgotten we are to meet in another four days time? The new moon waits-“
“-for no-one, I know, I know.” The man finished for her, rolling his eyes. “It’s not like I can forget, not with Winter breathing down my neck anyway.”
“I know you aren’t exactly the best of friends with Winter, but it will give you a chance to see everyone else too.” She tried to comfort him. “I’ll see you soon, Summer.”
The latter shot her a charming grin. “Good luck.” He said as a golden glow started to emanate from his self, growing brighter and brighter until it engulfed his entire body, and he started to break down into a shimmering yellow powder, which blew away on the cold night’s wind.
The woman, now alone, turned back to face the valley and smiled as she looked over the lands. Her present feeling of nostalgia seeming to flutter away on the same breeze that had taken her companion, as she breathed a deep sigh of the night air, suddenly feeling home again.
